Chronicling the behind-the-scenes account of the 1960 John F Kennedy Democratic Primary campaign in fictional Oak County, West Virginia, PAX, 1960 is a fast-paced account of Pax Combs, who stumbles upon and confiscates an illicit mob payment to the local sheriff, who works the local political apparatus on JFK’s account, unbeknown to JFK’s campaign. Pax flees with the money, chased by both the sheriff and mob wiseguys who delivered the money, all the corrupt activity being investigated by a local newspaperman and his female English teacher sidekick. Along the way, Pax takes up with a fortune-telling, mountain granny-woman while encountering, among others, militant moonshiners, a llama rancher, a litany of unknowing abettors, and several other nefarious characters with an interest in the money.
Reviewer and prominent West Virginia writer Denise Giardina claims that PAX, 1960 “would make a great movie.” Other reviewers have called it “a riveting read. It is a tightly plotted, suspenseful, provocative novel” (Donald Hays); “a vivid evocation of a country being born into a decade when the rules all changed” (John Hennessy); “a smart, funny, fast-paced novel, with a surprise around every corner – both for the Pax Combs, and for the lucky reader along for the ride” (Susan Perabo); and a “wild ride!” (Loren Graham)
